“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of Mendocino County best,” quoting Ernest Hemingway, said founder Gary Breen. “Hopland as well as Mendocino County is trying to position itself as a bike friendly destination and it has been getting a lot of attention in that regard. This is one way it can demonstrate that it can accommodate and is sensitive to the needs of cyclists as well as their families. This County has a long heritage of hosting professional events, but there is a lot of interest on behalf of our region in hosting more recreational and mass participation events like this one.”

This year the ride begins on Sunday, September 2^nd and is an all-day event for riders and families. It will offer four routes; GranFondo, meaning marathon, a 100-mile course with an elevation gain of 5000‘, a timed climb and a home stretch race for the competitive rider. Shotgun start time is at 6:30 am and entry fee is $75. The Meta – meaning half- is a 62-mile course, or a ‘metric’ century; includes a scenic ride with moderate climbs and a 3878’ elevation gain, includes the optional timed 8-mile hill climb and a flat 8-mile time-trial. Start time is between 7:00 – 7:30 am and entry fee is $75. The Mezzo, meaning medium, 30-mile course, is a leisurely meandering ride along rural Mendocino County vineyard roads, optional flat 8-mile time trial. Start time is at 9:00 am and entry fee is $75. The Picolo, meaning tiny, is a 7.5-mile family fun ride, along a tiny, winding, flat road for the budding cyclists. Start time is 10:00 am and entry fee is $25. Bring the kids and begin the weekend with a Saturday morning train ride aboard the famous vintage 1925 Skunk Train from Willits to Northspur. The train departs at 9:45 am and returns at 2:15 pm and is $40 adult and $24 children. Please visit www.skunktrain.com for more details.
